LOOM & KNOTTING

Woman working on a carpet Oriental carpets are made on looms made of wood or iron. The loom consists of two vertical polls with two horizontal bars across. Cotton thread are strenthened across the loom vertically (called warp) and horizontally called weft. The cotton base adds extra strength to the carpet.

Woman working on a carpet Of the many knotting techniques, the sehna knot is used in our carpets. In the sehna knot the yarn encircles one warp, one end emerging between a pair and the other outside the second warp thread from below.

The carpet is made by the weavers tying colored yarn to warp. Rows of knots are woven and are then beaten down with a comb to impart solidity and thickness to the pile.
